Charred Heavy Bench

Our Heavy Bench is a force of nature already with its natural trunk body overlaid with simple blackened steel. But when we were commissioned to create something extra special for a residence in Montauk, the deep red of the cedar log we chose didn’t seem to fit the home’s vibe. So, instead we burnt it all down – intentionally. Shou Sugi Ban, the Japanese process of burning wood to preserve it, was a perfect methodology. Often prized on building exteriors for its durability and insect-repellant properties, the effect is deep, crackled and beautifully tactile. On the Heavy Bench, it creates an imposing but sleek presence, punctuated by distinct alligator-like scaling on the piece’s cut log ends.
